This program has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians and nurses who have a specialized interest in the field of Ophthalmology.
Learning Objectives
Cataract/Anterior Segment
- Determine the best surgical technique for the multifocal patient (Physician)
- Formulate an approach to multifocal surgery including: selection, patient education, biometry, surgery and post-operative management (Physician)
- Evaluate the approach to multifocal surgery including: selection, patient education, biometry, surgery and post-operative management (Nurse)
Cornea/Refractive Surgery
- Identify the complexities that are often necessary to consider in refractive surgery (Physician)
- Distinguish specific corneal topographic patterns in Keratoconus patients to determine the appropriate IOL selection (Physician)
- Compare and contrast the surgical procedures of Cornea–Crosslinking, Deep Lamellar Keratoplasty, Disparate Thickness Lamellar Keratoplasty, Intralamellar Keratoplasty, Intacs and Penetrating
Keratoplasty as they are related to:
–Restoration of corneal rigidity and topography (Physician)
–Patient preparation and care (Nurse)
Glaucoma
- Interpret OCT printouts for the management of glaucoma (Physician)
- Assess the role that OCT has in diagnosing and monitoring glaucoma (Nurse)
Ocular Pathology
- Recognize ocular tumors and differentiate them from benign conditions that resemble cancers (Physicians and Nurses)
- Demonstrate improved ability to communicate with patients the new treatment modalities of eye cancers (Physicians and Nurses)
- Differentiate suspicious choroidal nevi from melanomas based on recent risk factors (Physician)
- Identify and be able to select appropriate treatment modalities for related eye cancers that can be incorporated in the ophthalmology practice (Physician)
Retina Vitreous
- Improve decision making and selection criteria regarding alternatives for treating retinal detachments (Physician)
- Define the principle laser types in clinical use and their fundamental mode of operation (Physician)
- Describe the five basic laser/tissue interactions and provide an example of each in clinical use in ophthalmic treatments (Physician)
- Review the clinical evidence relating to retinal detachment surgery (Nurse)
- Evaluate the use of new techniques for retinal detachment repair (Nurse)
Risk Management
- Fulfill ethical duties and reporting concerns (Physicians and Nurses)
- Identify challenged colleagues (Physicians and Nurses)
- Implement risk management strategies for reducing the frequency and severity of malpractice claims (Physicians and Nurses)
- Implement risk management measures designed to prevent high risk medical errors (Physicians and Nurses)
- Implement financial and patient flow benchmarks in managing the ophthalmology practice (Physician)
